Ethical Relativism

There is sensitive topics that exist within the world. If we talk about things like abortion being right or wrong, there is always uncertainty. With a topic as fragile as abortion we come to believe it’s hard to find a solution. Many people fight abortion on different arguments on a variety of different ways. This difference comes from a variety of societies. As Benedict says, “A normal action is one which falls well within the limits of expected behavior for a particular society.” It first has to be normal to us ourselves but also have to be normal to our society as a whole. This is where the uncertainty comes from. One societal group may think abortion is okay however another societal group may think it’s absolutely forbidden. For example, in the catholic church abortion is frowned upon.

“We recognize that morality differs in every society, and is a convenient term for socially approved habits. Mankind has always preferred to say, “It is a morally good,” rather than “It is habitual,” and the fact of this preference is matter enough for a critical science of ethics. But historically the two phrases are synonymous.” What this philosopher is saying, is that human society has been doing what everyone else is doing not because the norm is what is morally good. If we look at this as true that means that people aren’t really good people but they are a herd of followers that do not want to be different.
