Organs for saleeeee…

In America we have lots of items that we sell in a variety of different stores across the city. We have stores for literally anything. But what if you needed a liver, a finger and maybe even a kidney…is there a store where they have those for sale? People believe what they think is right. If we look at it through a Kantian perspective, it would be wrong. For the philosopher Kant, we shouldn’t be able to sell our organs because it’s abusive, disrespects humanity, exploitation and it puts a price on the human body. However for a Utilitarian his views would change quite a bit. For a Utilitarian, the answer would be yes because it creates the highest GHP(greatest happiness principle), saving a life, increase legal organs and decrease illegal ones, and finally it would decrease illegal activities. But what does this all mean?

Before I get into explaining both sides I would like to add that I understand the viewpoints for both sides. However, personally I tend to agree with Kant quite a bit more than I do with the Utilitarian side of the agreement. I think the Utilitarians have good points but I believe that selling organs should not be legal unless they find some type of way that could be moderated and looked over. I believe in the good of the people, and that there is good in everyone, but I think that there is equally the same amount that has been consumed with greed and “evil.” I think that the bad of the world would overcome the good and the organs that were meant for good would be used and abused in bad ways if they weren’t properly accounted for. I believe most of Kants reasons are quite easy to explain except the disrespecting humanity argument. This is because he believes that it disrespects the human body and that it shouldn’t be messed with. With being able to sell organs it puts different price tags to a human body especially if you and your family are going through a tough patch. It would make getting out of that tough patch easy because if you could sell an organ you don’t quite “need” than there would be tons of people trying to sell all parts of their body. Most of the utilitarian reasons are also easy except the maybe the illegal and legal organs and the GHP. The GHP is the greatest happiness principle and this basically states, “it brings the greatest amount of happiness for the most number of people.” The illegal and legal organs comes from the idea that there is already is organs being sold on the black markets. Hence, if you legalize the selling of organs that the illegal methods of selling organs would disappear and that the legal ways of getting organs would improve. We can see the positives of both sides. However, I agree more with the Kantian perspective because the goods may come from being able to sell an organ, the people of the world should not be able to purchase an organ(explain why). I mean if we look at the current pandemic that is the Corona Virus then we can see that in the face of fear humanity would do lots of weird and unreasonable things. Just imagine if we could go out and buy a lung, or if we could sell a lung what extremes would people be willing to go to.
